“12 Years a Slave” is winning widespread acclaim for telling the true story of a free black man who was kidnapped and forced into slavery in the South. But what happened to Solomon Northup after his ordeal is still a mystery.

Dave Cottrell’s insight:

The idea that Mr. Northrup reinvented himself and so disappeared from history is one that intrigues me, as it has happened very close to me, where a family member has disappeared from history, only to be rediscovered many years later, having moved a great distance from family and friends.  Today, it is much more unlikely and difficult, but still possible.  In the mid 1800s, it would have been relatively simple.
